CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Carter opted out of breakfast, as I’d expected, citing a need to go home and feed Tiny and a promise to Emmaline to stop by for an early lunch. So Ida Belle, Gertie, and I had a long breakfast and talked to other customers about Gage’s death, the exploding boat seat, and Celia’s run-in with Rambo. After breakfast, we made a pass by the bakery to chat with Ally for a bit and managed to consume a pastry each. By that time it was close to 11:00 a.m., and we figured it was a reasonable time to call.

I waited until we were back in the SUV before dialing the number Walter had provided.

“Who dat?” Red answered, in typical Cajun fashion.

“Hi, Red. This is Fortune Redding. We chatted at the Swamp Bar.”

“Heck, I know who you are, girl. What can I do for you?”

“I was hoping I could talk with you a bit more about Gage. Somewhere private. Are you available now by any chance?”

“I guess I sort of am. I’m over at Pops Doucet’s place visiting. I try to make it by a couple times a week.”

‘Pops’ Doucet was Whiskey and Nickel’s father. He had terminal cancer and according to his doctors, should have exited life well over a year ago. But he was intent on showing them what true Cajun stubbornness could accomplish and was still hanging on. He was mostly housebound and looked after by Nickel and a day nurse who made rounds, but he still managed poker with his friends every week.

“Do you think he’d mind more company?”

“Pretty sure he’d love some more, especially pretty ladies.”

“Great. Then let him know we’re going to drop by. And we just left the bakery with a box of goodies.”

“Pretty ladies and Ally’s treats. The only way this day could get better was if you brought us fresh fish and some good knees.”

I laughed. “I could probably manage some fish, but the knees are out of my wheelhouse. See you in about thirty minutes.”

“He’s at Pops’s house,” I said when I disconnected.

Ida Belle perked up. “Oh. That might work out even better than we thought. Pops is good friends with Miriam Babin and has known Gage and Graham all their lives. Probably knows them better than anyone but Jenny.”

“The bonus package,” I said. “Swing by my house and I’ll grab some of those fillets you gave me a couple weeks ago from my freezer. They’re not exactly fresh, but you caught them, so those and the baked goods should get them talking.”

We headed for Pops’s house with the fish and the box of assorted pastries and cookies and Red had the front door opened, waving us in, as soon as we stepped onto the porch. We followed him into the kitchen where Pops sat at the table, a glass of iced tea in front of him. We all greeted him, and he gave us a big smile and waved at the chairs.

“Pull another chair in here from the dining room,” he told Red.
